Local Eaglemont Tennis coach Shane Scrutton captured the ITF Victorian 45 and over Mens Claycourt Singles title with a convincing win at Royal South Yarra Tennis Club over the Queens Birthday Long Weekend.
Despite being an unseeded wildcard entry, 46-year-old Scrutton cruised through the opening three rounds of the tournament for the loss of only 3 games, defeating 2nd seeded Timo Riippa in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-2.
Scrutton, Club Coach at Eaglemont Tennis Club, then defeated top seeded South Australian Martin Richards in a tight 6-4, 6-4 win which lasted over 2 hours.
Scrutton was surprised at going through the tournament without dropping a set.
“It was only the second Seniors event I have ever played in, but after winning the first match I knew I was in with a good chance,” he said.
“I knew it was going to be a tough match in the final (against Richards) as he made the semifinals of the National 45’s event in January and is a very tough competitor.”
